The NHL Player Safety has announced today, April 2nd, that Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has been fined $5,000 for his cross-check on Philadelphia Flyers defenceman, Andrew MacDonald.
As most know, this is not the first time that Brad Marchand has earned a fine or suspension for a poor decision on the ice. This is his fifth fine in his career, including a $2,000 embellishment fine last month in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Marchand has also been suspended six times in his career, his most recent coming this year just prior to the All-Star game, when he elbowed Devils forward, Marcus Johansson.
However, this time around, even a maximum fine seems a bit odd. Also during yesterday’s game against the Flyers, Bruins rookie, Ryan Donato was hit with a high elbow by a Flyers player. There was no call on the ice and the league chose not to look into the play any further. Even though Marchand is a repeat offender, and the cross-check to MacDonald was unnecessary, the elbow to Donato was more than questionable.
Although, we can be thankful that it was only a fine, as the Bruins cannot afford to lose their leading scorer to another suspension this late in the season. Marchand 34-50-84 totals in 63 games according to Hockey DB.
