Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has been named an assistant general manager for Team Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Hockey Canada also announced Wednesday that St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong would serve in the same role for Canada at the Olympics.

Armstrong’s supporting staff will be made up of Sweeney, Oilers GM Ken Holland, Seattle Kraken GM Ron Francis, former goaltender and Florida Panthers special advisor Roberto Luongo, as well as Scott Salmond of Hockey Canada.

Armstrong also served as GM of Team Canada during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, where Canada won gold. This is the first time Sweeney is serving in a managerial role outside of the Bruins organization.

The New Brunswick native was named Boston’s general manager in 2015. After failing to qualify for the playoffs under Sweeney in his first season, the Bruins have made it to the playoffs each season since.

Sweeney was named as the NHL’s General Manager of the Year following the 2018-19 season, after the Bruins made it to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Last year, Boston won the President’s Trophy as the league’s top team during the shortened 2019-20 regular season.

Boston selected the Harvard University product in the eighth round (166th overall) of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. Sweeney played 15 of his 16 NHL seasons with the Bruins, skating over 1,000 games with the organization.
