The trade deadline may have passed, but the Boston Bruins are not done with their transactions. General manager Don Sweeney announced Monday morning that the team has signed defenseman Brady Lyle to an entry-level contract. The deal is worth a cap hit of $800,000 over two years.
Mark Divver had reported on Friday that some other NHL clubs had interest in Lyle, who under contract with the Providence Bruins, Boston’s American Hockey League affiliate, through the 2021-22 season. However, Divver noted that Boston was expected to sign Lyle to an ELC.
In 19 games with Providence this year, the 21-year-old has six goals and six assists for 12 points with a plus-10 rating. His six goals are tied for the most among AHL defensemen.
In 295 OHL regular season contests over six seasons between the North Bay Battalion and the Owen Sound Attack, the 6-foot-3, 213-pound blueliner recorded 49-126-175 totals. In 25 total playoff games during his time in juniors, Lyle had 10 points (2g, 8a).
The North Bay, Ont., native had a career season during his final year in the OHL in 2019-20 with Owen Sound, posting 22 goals and 43 assists for 65 points in 62 games to go along with 28 penalty minutes and a plus-25 rating. Following the season, Lyle signed with the P-Bruins as an undrafted free agent last April.
Prior to the beginning of the 2020-21 AHL season, Lyle skated on loan in Slovakia with Detva HC of the Slovak Tipsport Liga, the top league in the country. In six contests, the Lyle notched a goal and two assists for three points in addition to a plus-five rating.
