At least for the Boston Bruins season opener, head coach Bruce Cassidy has decided that Sway is the way. On Friday, Cassidy announced that Jeremy Swayman would get the start against the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

The start will be just the 11th of the 22-year-olds career. With a record of 7-3, a goals-against-average of 1.50, and a .945 save percentage, it’s hard to argue against the decision.

The goaltender, born in Anchorage, Alaska, also continued his quality performance this preseason outperforming Linus Ullmark. While Ullmark is coming off an injury and realizing what it is like to play at a high level after spending his career in Buffalo, Swayman deserves to be rewarded for his performance.

But Bruins fans shouldn’t read too much into the decision. This doesn’t mean that Swayman is the top goaltender, and it also doesn’t mean that the Ullmark deal was a bust. Cassidy has said that the Bruins will utilize both guys in some sort of fashion.

The B’s need to handle Swayman carefully. He is the future between the pipes, and they can’t afford to mess him up by rushing him into things. While it’s come at a high price, having Ullmark as a safety net is good for Swayman and the team.

But Swayman has earned the opening night start. He gives the Bruins the best chance to win on Saturday night.

So make sure to tune in on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET to see Boston’s season begin, and Swayman gets the first opening night start of his career. Who knows, it could be the start of a Calder Trophy-winning season for the goaltender?
