It was a rough night in Boston as the Bruins blew a two-goal lead over the visiting Penguins. The Black and Gold were unable to keep the momentum going after a great first period. Things got a bit worse as the team lost their Captain during the final period as well as facing the possibility of having one of their best players suspended due to a heated confrontation on the ice with the visiting team’s goaltender.

GAME REPORT

The Boston Bruins went early on the power play when Charlie Coyle drew a tripping call courtesy of the Penguins’ Radim Zohoma. Within a few moments into the man-advantage, David Pastrnak drilled a one-timer getting the B’s on the scoreboard 1-0 nabbing his 23rd goal of the season.

Boston’s Jake Debrusk was sent to the penalty box for hooking against Dominik Simon, however no score during Pittsburgh’s power play. As the Bruins’ second line of Taylor Hall, Eric Haula, and Pastrnak hustled towards the Penguins net, number 88 picked the rebound out of mid-air and scored his second goal of the night, giving the B’s a 2-0 lead.

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-17, PIT-10

A bad turnover by the B’s led to a two-on-one where former Boston Bruins player Danton Heinen scored making it 2-1. Seconds later Heinen would tie the game as he wristed the puck past Jeremy Swayman. The Bruins had the chance to take the lead as they went on the power play; Pittsburgh was called for too many men on the ice. No score for either team.

Sidney Crosby made it 3-2 as he scored on a Penguins’ power-play after Charlie Coyle was called for interference. The B’s quickly looked to tie the game as they rushed towards the Penguins net however were unable to connect. The period ended on a four-on-four as Taylor Hall and Mike Matheson were both called for roughing.

END OF SECOND PERIOD: BOS-2, PIT-3

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-18, PIT-8

The Bruins went short-handed in the first minute of the third period as Craig Smith was called for interference against Brock McGinn (no goal). The TD Garden went silent as Captain Patrice Bergeron got tangled up with Sidney Crosby’s skates. Bergeron would head down the tunnel as he was slow to catch his breath.

Crosby would see some time in the penalty box for roughing against Matt Grzelcyk however the Bruins were unable to tie the game. Jarry made the save of the night as he nabbed a potential tying goal from the Bruins’ Tomas Nosek.

An empty net and a mishandling of the puck led to the Penguins scoring, making it 4-2. Bryan Rust would tally his 15th goal of the season. Brad Marchand was escorted off the ice after a punch and a stick to the face of Tristan Jarry. He was given penalties for roughing and an attempt to injure a player. Pittsburgh wins 4-2 after losing their last four games. The Bruins have lost three out of their last five games and were unable to extend their lead after a solid first period.
