The Boston Bruins are hosting a 50-year anniversary celebration of the 1972 Stanley Cup Championship team on Thursday before their game against the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m.
The team beat the New York Rangers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals on May 11, 1972. The series marked Boston’s second win over the Rangers for a Stanley Cup, with the first being in 1979.
Members of the 1972 team in attendance will include Don Awrey, John Bucyk, Ken Hodge, Don Marcotte, Garry Peters, Dallas Smith, Rick Smith, and family members of Ace Bailey and John McKenzie. Current players, as well as coaches and staff, will wear limited-edition pins honoring the entire 1972 team.
The win 50 years ago capped a 54-13-11 season where Phil Esposito (66 goals, 67 assists, 133 points) and defenseman Bobby Orr (37 goals, 80 assists, 117 points) led the NHL in scoring. Orr also won his second Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP.
Thursday night’s ceremony will begin with a commemorative video of the team’s run for the Cup, including interviews with players and media. Then members of the 1972 team will participate in a ceremonial puck drop.
Fans attending the game will get the chance to grab a 1972 commemorative poster when entering TD Garden. There will also be in-game trivia and video segments highlighting players and key moments from the championship run.
Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
