While it was a mostly quiet first day of free agency for the Bruins, General Manager Don Sweeney announced a string of depth signings that should bolster the Providence Bruins lineup and provide Boston with insurance in case of emergency. Among those signings was 33-year-old goaltender Keith Kinkaid, who agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with a $750K cap hit at the NHL level.
After a standout two-year stint at Union College, Kinkaid signed an entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils in 2011. Since turning professional, the 6′-2″ 191-pound Farmingville, New York native has had stops in the Devils, Canadiens, and Rangers organizations, appearing in 167 NHL games. At the NHL level, he holds a record of 69-59-21 with a .905 save percentage and 2.92 goals against average. Kinkaid has a similar track record at the AHL level, as he boasts a record of 96-74-28 with a .906 save percentage and 2.70 goals against average. He has also made headlines as a popular Twitter presence (@Blockaid1) that once took a fan on a date to Chipotle in 2018.
While the Bruins did not have an immediate need in goal in Boston with the tandem of Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark firmly entrenched as the 1a/1b, the addition of Kinkaid provides veteran insurance in Providence, who has proven to be able to hold his own in the NHL when necessary. With his experience at both levels, Kinkaid will also be a valuable resource to the development of young netminders Kyle Keyser and Brandon Bussi as they continue their professional hockey careers.
