In a surprise move to start the season, Bruins General manager Don Sweeney has re-signed defenseman Charlie McAvoy to an eight-year, $76-million contract extension with an AAV of $9.5-million. The contract won’t be set to kick in until next season. This contract is a nice pay raise for McAvoy, who will be coming off a 3-year, $4.9-million AAV bridge deal he signed back in the 2019-2020 NHL season.
McAvoy has been a staple on the Bruins’ first-pairing for the last few years, growing into one of the top defensemen in the NHL. To this point, McAvoy has amassed 122-points in 235-games-played with a career plus-minus 80. He has yet to eclipse the 40-point mark yet, but last year’s shortened season saw him put up 30-points in 51-games-played and had it been an entire year, he most likely would have surpassed that mark.
Moving forward, McAvoy will be looked upon as a true franchise defenseman who can help lead this team to another Stanley Cup championship. With top powerplay minutes, seeing a big offensive year from the young defenseman would be a step in the right direction to cement himself as a valuable point producer on the blue line. This player has the tools to be a Norris Trophy- finalist and winner for years to come. This is one piece of the future that the Bruins front office could not let slip away. The Boston Bruins organization and Charlie McAvoy should be happy with this deal, and most importantly, the fans of the spoked b!
