Last night Boston Bruins defensive prospect Mason Lohrei stepped on the ice for the first time as an Ohio State Buckeye freshman and quickly got to work offensively. The Buckeyes were in Waltham, Massachusetts, to face the Bentley University Falcons on Friday night at the Bentley Arena in front of a crowd of 1,585. The 6′-4″ 194-pound 2020 second-round pick of the B’s scored an even-strength goal at the 1:46 mark of the second period. Ohio State made a valiant effort to try and get back in the game after the second frame goal from Lohrei but would end the game losing 2-1.
Before joining the NCAA ranks with Ohio State, the 20-year-old Wisconsin native chose the USHL for further development in the top tier-1 junior league in the United States. The Waterloo Black Hawks selected the big defenseman in the fourth round of the 2018 USHL Entry Draft but would never suit up for the team that picked him as Waterloo would trade his rights to the Green Bay Gamblers in February of 2018. Lohrei would join Green Bay in his first full season in 2019/20, appearing in 48 games posting 8-29-37 numbers. In his second season in 2020/21 is where his true upside was on display as he contributed 19-40-59 totals in 48 games played.
In his final season with Green Bay, Mason would rack up impressive individual awards, including the USHL Defenseman of the Year, USHL First All-Star Team, and led the league in all offensive categories as a blueliner in goals, assists, and points. This would be a solid stepping stone for a breakout NCAA career as a Boston Bruins prospect and an essential developmental level before joining the NHL B’s organization in the near future. Below is a scouting report of Mason Lohrei from The Draft Analyst Steve Kournianos and a better example of his playing ability as a big rugged defenseman.
The next game for the Lohrei and the Ohio State Men’s Hockey team is tonight with another Non-Conference game against Bentley University on the road in Waltham, Mass. at 6:05 pm. The Buckeyes look to change the fate of last night’s game one of the season against Bentley in the 2-1 loss, and Bruins prospect defenseman Lohrei looks to continue adding points to the scoresheet.
