The air was stale and the beer was flat as the Boston Bruins had one of their worst performances of the season so far losing 2-1 to the Detroit Red Wings. Throughout the game, the team at times looked apathetic and had few moments of energy however were unable to muster up any momentum. David Pastrnak had the lone goal for the Bruins.
GAME RECAP
A quiet first period for both teams as shots were eight to five. The Bruins had a few scoring opportunities however were unable to connect. No penalties or score for either team during a listless period.
END OF FIRST PERIOD: BOS-0, DET-0
SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-8, DET-1
The second period continued to be a bit lackluster and unfortunately, Detroit would open up the score as Filip Zadina backhanded the puck past Linus Ullmark. With the Red Wings leading 1-0, the Bruins gameplay had a little bit of steam as they looked to even the score.
There was a stoppage in-game as a referee went down on the ice after falling awkwardly and looked to have severely sprained his knee. Boston’s puck handling drew the ire of the restless Bruins fans. During the last two minutes of the period, both teams were down a player as both Nick Foligno and Vladislav Namestnikov were called for roughing.
Detroit had a few close chances as the puck hit the Bruins goal post. At the closing of the period, Michael Rasmussen would get a holding penalty against Erik Haula. Boston would open up the third period on the man advantage after an uninspired second period.
END OF SECOND PERIOD: BOS-0, DET-2
SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-17, DET-5
Boston would be on the power play for the first time tonight at the beginning of the third period, however were unable to muster any good-quality shots towards Detroit’s net. Fists flew after a cross-check from behind on Patrice Bergeron which led to another power play for the Bruins.
Within a minute into the penalty, Boston would be on a two-man advantage as Marc Staal was called for holding against Nick Foligno. After some fancy maneuvering, the Bruins finally scored tying the game 1-1. David Pastrnak would nab his eighth goal of the season.
Boston looked more confident as they gathered speed towards the Red Wings end however a potential scoring chance was nullified after an obvious goaltender interference by the Bruins. Detroit drew a penalty soon after as Curtis Lazar was called for tripping Filip Zadina.
The Red Wings scored as Eric Staal snapped one in past Ullmark making it 2-1. With time ticking away and an empty net, the Bruins gave one last shot to send this game into overtime. Unfortunately, their effort was wasted as they handed the Red Wings their third win in a row and a historic 3,000th NHL game won in franchise history.
