Bergeron. Marchand. McAvoy. If you watched any of tonight’s game, those names were on repeat throughout the night as the Bruins outshot and outplayed the Detroit Red Wings to win 5-1. And if there were any lingering concerns amongst local sports personalities on whether not Patrice Bergeron (who had four goals) still has what it takes to be a Bruin, tonight’s win should serve as a reminder to not quickly jump the gun when it comes to the Captain.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Detroit drew a penalty early in the first period as Erik Haula was called for tripping against Joe Veleno. After a few close calls down in the Bruns zone, the boys in Black and Gold were able to kill their opponent’s power play. Halfway into the period, the Red Wing’s were down a man as Vladislav Namestnikov was caught playing without a helmet giving the B’s their first power play of the night.
After the Bruins face-off win, Patrice Bergeron snapped one past Thomas Greiss getting the B’s on the board first during the man-advantage. Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy were awarded the assists.
Not letting up on their gameplay, the Bruins continued to swarm Detroit’s net. With a little over three minutes left to the period, Boston was once again on the power play when Nick Leddy was called for tripping Charlie McAvoy. Despite some close calls, the Bruins were unable to score.
SCORE END OF FIRST PERIOD: BOS-1, DET-0
SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-11, DET 3
The Bruins wasted no time in the first few minutes of the second period as they looked to gain the lead forcing Greiss to smother the puck. As Detroit’s Tyler Bertuzzi stole the puck from Charlie McAvoy, his stick hit the Bruins defenseman stick which lead to an interference call. Boston once again would be on the power play and took full advantage as Patrice Bergeron scored his second goal of the night (Marchand with the helper).
A shot blocked by Jake DeBrusk led to an Erik Haula breakaway play however he was unable to score. As frustration grew amongst the Detroit players, the Bruins continued to control of the game. With a little over two minutes left, the B’s had the man advantage as Moritz Seider was called for holding against Karson Kuhlman. As you would have guessed, Patrice Bergeron would score a hat trick giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead.
SCORE END OF SECOND PERIOD: BOS-3, DET-0
SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-26, DET-9
With a minute into the final period, Detroit would get on the power play as Connor Clifton was called for tripping against Vladislav Namestnikov. No shots on goal for the Red Wings. Soon thereafter, Boston was short a man as David Pastrnak was called for hi-sticking against Robby Fabbri giving Detroit their third power play of the night.
The Red Wings had a golden opportunity as Bergeron was also sent to the penalty box for tripping against Filip Hronek. In a 5-on-3 man-advantage, Detroit finally get on the board as Lucas Raymond scored his fifth of the season. With Pastrnak out of the box, the Red Wings would have another chance with a 5-on-4 advantage however the Bruins extended their lead as Mike Reilly scored a short-handed goal from a rebound puck (courtesy of an attempted shot by Curtis Lazar).
For the fifth time tonight, Boston would be on the power play as Joe Velena was called for delay of game. Fists flew as tensions boiled over in front of the Bruins’ crease that saw Matt Grzelcyk get called for roughing while Filip Hronek was nabbed for unsportsmanlike conduct.
In the final four minutes of the period, Patrice Bergeron scored his fourth goal of the night making it 5-1.
The B’s top lines had great puck control throughout the night as they handily won 5-1. The Captain had four points tonight while Marchand had three and McAvoy had two points.
