It was a tough way to close out a seven-game homestead as the Boston Bruins lose 5-3 to the Anaheim Ducks. Veteran goaltender Tuukka Rask continues to find his game after returning from a long rehab following hip surgery.
GAME RECAP
The Ducks opened up the scoring early in the first period as Derek Grant tipped the puck in past Tuukka Rask during the power-play (initially credited to Ryan Getzlaf). Charlie McAvoy was nabbed for a hooking penalty against Rickard Rakell.
With a little under 11 minutes left to the period, Anaheim once again would get on the man advantage when Bruins’ Oskar Steen received a boarding call against Nicolas Deslauriers. Though the call initially was for a five-minute major, the penalty was downgraded to two minutes after officials reviewed the play. An energetic first period for both teams.
SCORE END OF THE FIRST: BOS-0, ANA-1
SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-5, ANA-11
Boston would get on the power play seconds into the period with Trevor Zegras going to the box for a slashing penalty against Patrice Bergeron. Unfortunately, the Ducks took advantage as Isac Lundestrom scored a short-handed goal, giving Anaheim a 2-0 lead.
David Pastrnak got the B’s on the scoreboard one-timing the puck past the Ducks goaltender John Gibson, making it 2-1.
Gloves dropped between Nick Foligno and Sam Carrick with eleven minutes left to the period. The infarction earned both players a five-minute penalty for fighting. Bruins’ momentum was stalled as Ryan Getzlaf tallied his third goal of the season, making it 3-1. Foligno did not return to the game due to an upper-body injury.
A huge chance for Boston as Josh Mahura was called for slashing against Oskar Steen. The B’s were within one as Taylor Hall scored off a Brad Marchand feed, giving the team their first power play goal of the night.
SCORE END OF SECOND: BOS-2, ANA-3
SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-10, ANA-9
Once again Anaheim would draw a penalty seconds into the third period but were unable to complete the play. Troy Terry tallied his 23rd goal of the night giving the Ducks a 4-2 lead. With a little over nine minutes left to the period, Greg Pateryn slapped the puck top shelf, widening the score 5-2.
Looking to regain some traction to their game, Erik Haula gave the B’s some needed life as he nabbed his fourth goal of the season, making it 5-3.
With an empty net, Boston had the extra attacker for the last few minutes of the period as they looked to possibly tie the game. Despite pressure from the Black and Gold, the Bruins were unable to capitalize, losing 5-3.
David Pastrnak had two points in tonight’s loss; Rask made 22 saves on 27 shots. The Bruins still hold on to fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a 24-13-2 record and are now three points behind the Maple Leafs. The B’s are 5-2 in their last seven-game homestead. David Pastrnak has become the 11th Bruins player to record at least six consecutive 20-goal seasons.
