Well, well, well. A new chapter in Boston Bruins hockey has begun. Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins have hired former Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) Denver Pioneers Men’s hockey and Dallas Star’s coach Jim Montgomery as the Bruins’ 29th head coach in franchise history.
While coaching in the USHL, the Montreal native led his team to a 118-45-21 record, including two Clark Cup Titles in three seasons.
Montgomery also spent five seasons as the NCHC Denver Pioneers head coach, where he also found success. He led his team to an overall record of 125-57-26, including two Frozen Four appearances and a National Championship in 2016-2017. However, his accolades don’t stop there, as he was able to win the NCHC Tournament in 2014 and NCAA Coach of the Year Award in 2017. Winning seems to be in his pedigree.
In 2018 he was hired as the head coach of the Dallas Stars and led the team in his first season at the NHL level to a 43-32-7 record, qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs but falling to the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. However, he was fired in 2019-2020 for reasons unrelated to hockey.
