The Boston Bruins had quite the night as they skated off with a 6-3 win in their home opener at the TD Garden. After a strong start in the first period, the game started to slip away as sloppy defensive plays led to a tied game at one point. Luckily the boys in Black and Gold rebounded to win and are now 2-0.

GAME NOTES

A little dust-up between the two teams early in the first set the tone for the game. Former Bruins’ Nick Ritchie gave the B’s an early man-advantage on a cross-checking penalty against Brandon Carlo (who did not return to the game after the end of the period).

Within moments the Bruins would be on a five-on-three situation for 31 seconds when Troy Stecher was called for slashing against Pavel Zacha. The newly acquired forward got Boston on the scoreboard during the power play as he scored his first goal as a Bruin.

The play came off the rebound after an initial shot by Nick Foligno which hit the post. Foligno would get the assist making it his 500th NHL career point. Arizona nearly tied the game as the puck pinged off the post behind Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman. Charlie Coyle made it 2-0 scoring top-shelf late in the period.

SCORE END OF FIRST: BOS-2, ARI-0

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-12, ARI-4

Trent Frederic and Liam O’Brien dropped gloves early in the second and were both assessed a five-minute major for fighting. A potentional first NHL goal by Jakub Lauko would be waived off for goalie interference but to the chagrin of the Boston crowd.

Bruins’ Taylor Hall was called for a hooking penalty giving the ‘Yotes a power play opportunity that led to a 2-1 score. Clayton Keller would get the goal at 6:21. Boston was down a player moments later when Hampus Lindholm was charged with a tripping penalty against Barrett Hayton. While the B’s managed to kill off the penalty, they found themselves right back on the disadvantage when Tomas Nosek was nabbed for a tripping penalty. No goal for either team.

Nick Foligno tipped in the puck from a Connor Clifton shot making the score 3-1. Swayman made some timely saves including one where he stonewalled a potential breakaway goal by Dylan Guenther.

SCORE END OF SECOND: BOS-3, ARI-1

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-7, ARI-14

Arizona would be within one goal as the B’s failed to clear the puck down in their own end. Josh Brown scored his first goal of the season as he snapped one in past Swayman. The Bruins would get a chance to re-establish their gameplay when the team went on the power play as Troy Stecher was called for hooking against Foligno.

Unfortunately, the ‘Yotes would take advantage when Shayne Gostisbehere scored a short-handed goal tying the game 3-3. Boston thankfully regain the lead when Derek Forbert wristed one past Arizona’s goaltender Karel Vejmelka. Bruins’ newcomer A.J. Greer scored twice tonight including an empty-netter giving the team a 6-3 lead.

Tensions on the ice closed out the final period with Boston winning their second game of the season at the TD Garden.
