Tonight was not a good night defensively for the Boston Bruins as they were handed their first loss of the season by the Ottawa Senators in a somewhat odd and ridiculously played game at the Canadian Tire Centre. The B’s tried to muster a comeback in the second game of a back-to-back but ultimately fell 5-7 to Ottawa. Boston is now 3-1 while the Senators are 1-2.

GAME NOTES

Ottawa would jump out in front early in the first minute of the game as Claude Giroux slid the puck past Bruins’ goaltender Jeremy Swayman making it 1-0. Moments later Brady Tkachuk wristed one in at 3:09 of the first period.

A potential third goal by the Sens was ruled a goalie interference when there was a question about whether or not B’s newcomer Anton Stralman pushed Tkachuk into Swayman. Unfortunately, luck ran out for the Bruins as Drake Batherson scored the third goal of the night (this one counted).

With three minutes left in the period, Boston got on the board as Patrice Bergeron scored on a rebound after an initial wrap-around attempt by David Pastrnak. The Bruins would get a late power play when Pastrnak was tripped by Artem Zub, but were unable to capitalize.

SCORE END OF THE FIRST: BOS-1, OTT-3

SHOTS ON GOL: BOS-11, OTT-9

Boston opened up the second period with the man-advantage and the team would be within one goal as David Krejci scored on the power play, making it 3-2. Moments after, the Bruins tied the game when A.J. Greer snapped one in past Sens’ goaltender Anton Forsberg.

The Senators’ Shane Pinto slapped one in past Swayman making it 4-3. Sloppy puck handling and unnecessary giveaways plagued the team and Ottawa took full advantage. Tim Stützle scored at 13:58 in the second, giving the Sens a two-goal lead.

Mark Kastelic made it 6-3 at 16:29 as the game slipped away from the Black and Gold. In another comeback attempt, Boston’s Nick Foligno scored making it 6-4. Fans saw four-on-four action as both teams were assessed penalties late in the closing seconds of the game. David Pastrnak banked one in as the second period came to a close.

SCORE END OF THE SECOND: BOS-5, OTT-6

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-12, OTT-16

Jeremy Swayman did not return to the game; Linus Ullmark took over netminding duties. With the Senators continuing to control the game and Boston desperately trying to some sort of comeback, both teams were once again assessed penalties. Unfortunately for Bruins’ fans, it would be Ottawa’s Artem Zub that gave his team another two-goal lead.

Both teams had late power play chances when Erik Brannstrom was given a slashing penalty again Jakub Lauko. Patrice Bergeron would also get an interference penalty in the closing minute of the final period. A tough ending for Boston in a bizarrely played game.

END OF GAME SCORE: BOS-5, OTT-7

TOTAL SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-33, OTT-31

NEXT GAME: October 20th versus Anaheim Ducks @ TD Garden with puck drop at 7:00 pm
