The Boston Bruins have solidified their record-setting start with a 5-2 win over the New York Rangers tonight at the Madison Square Garden. Boston now has 20 points and continues to lead the Atlantic Division and the entire league.
It would be a quiet and frustrating period for the Rangers as the Bruins dictated gameplay soon after the puck drop. David Pastrnak got things going for the B’s as he roofed a shot from a nearly impossible-angled backhander giving Boston a 1-0 lead late in the first. Taylor Hall would be assessed with the assist as the first period closed out with the Bruins on top.
New York’s Ryan Lindgren did not return to tonight’s bout after ending his shift with an upper-body injury. With the second period underway, the B’s would be on the man advantage after a tripping call against Adam Fox. After a tough first period, the Rangers ramped up offensive pressure against Boston’s goaltender Linus Ullmark.
New York’s Jimmy Vassey tied the game 1-1 scoring off a feed from teammate Mika Zibanejad. Mayhem on the ice broke out as the fists flew between a couple of players stemming from a clean, hard hit by Braden Schneider on Trent Frederic. Boston’s A.J. Greer was assessed a fighting and instigator/misconduct penalty against Braden Schneider (served by Jakub Lauko).
Trent Frederic was also nabbed for fighting against Barclay Goodrow. Schneider and Goodrow also sat out on matching fighting penalties. The Rangers controlled the second period limiting the Bruins scoring chances and at one point Boston had 0 shots in 10 minutes of gameplay.
Charlie Coyle made it 2-1 at 02:56 into the third and final period. Both Hampus Lidholm and Nick Foligno nabbed the assist on the goal. The lead was short-lived as the Rangers tied it up 2-2 when Adam Fox scored 48 seconds after the Coyle goal.
Boston’s Trent Frederic gave the B’s a 3-2 lead wristing the puck past Igor Shesterkin. Nick Foligno and Connor Clifton were given the helper on the goal. Jake DeBrusk made it 4-2 after scoring from a Pavel Zacha feed initially set up by Taylor Hall.
The Bruins would get a couple of man advantages when Zac Jones was called for holding against Charlie Coyle and with a little over three minutes left in the period Mika Zibanejad was nabbed for tripping against Taylor Hall.
With an empty Rangers net, Hampus Lindholm scored the team’s fifth goal of the night, winning 5-2. Boston has now won seven games in a row as they snapped New York’s three-game winning streak.
David Pastrnak scored his eighth goal of the season and is now third in the league with 18 points. Linus Ullmark is now 8-0-0 and has tied a Bruins record for most consecutive wins by a goalie at the start of a season. Ullmark made 18 saves for the night while Shesterkin made 32 saves. Both Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno tallied points for their assists in tonight’s goals.

TOTAL SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-37, NYR-20
