Over their 100-year history as a franchise, the Boston Bruins have had many memorable moments. Some are more cemented in the Franchise’s history than others, but there have been some that are notably absurd .

One occurred on January 29th, 2013, during a Bruins shootout win over the New Jersey Devils. It involved a boneheaded spectator nearly costing the Bruins in a shootout.

It’s been a long trend in the NHL that certain teams’ fans throw objects onto the ice as tradition. The Detroit Red Wings have the octopus, the Florida Panthers have the rats, and the Nashville Predators have the catfish. However, this incident at TD Garden was far from being a traditional matter.

It happened when Tyler Seguin appeared to have opened the shootout by beating Devils goalie Johan Hedberg. However, a spectator threw an object on the ice during the attempt, which resulted in the officials having a conference. They eventually ruled that Seguin would have to retake his shot because the object was thrown toward the New Jersey net.

So, what was the object that caused such a situation to occur? It was a partially eaten home-cooked sausage sandwich. Yup, that’s right, a sausage. Whoever threw the sausage had a good arm because it slid on the ice just behind Hedberg. Even though he never saw it, Seguin was forced to shoot again. Luckily, he was able to score again, and the Bruins later won 2-1 in the shootout. But now, years later, it’s a memorable moment that Boston fans can look back at and have a laugh.
