The Boston Bruins have placed defenseman Ian Mitchell on waivers, Elliotte Friedman announced on Friday. Mitchell, who signed a one-year extension with the team on July 23rd, 2024, made the team’s opening night roster with an Injured Non-Roster designation due to an undisclosed injury suffered in practice on Monday.

Last season, Mitchell appeared in 13 games with Boston, notching two assists before being placed on waivers in December. The 25-year-old would clear waivers and report to Providence, where he would finish the season. Mitchell played 42 games for the P-Bruins, scoring six goals and 18 assists to finish the season with 24 points. In the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs, he tallied two goals and two assists in Providence’s series loss to the Hartford Wolf Pack.

The St. Albert, Alberta native was acquired along with defenseman Alec Regula on June 27, 2023, in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks that sent Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to the Windy City. In his three seasons in the Blackhawks system, the six-foot, 192-pound defenseman appeared in 82 NHL games, scoring four goals and 12 assists.

Mitchell was selected with the 57th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft by Chicago. He played three seasons at Denver University before jumping to the professional level at the end of the 2019-20 season. In his first season of NCAA hockey at Denver, Mitchell was coached by the Bruins’ Head Coach Jim Montgomery.
