After a thrilling 3-2 victory last night against the Bridgeport Islanders at the Amica Mutual Pavilion, the Providence Bruins are set to play against the Islanders again, this time on the road at Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The P-Bruins aim to build on their impressive performance from last night as they face the Islanders again today and then take on the Hartford Wolf Pack tomorrow to round out their first three-in-three of the season.

Last night, the Bruins played a complete 60-minute game. At first, they faced a very hot goalie in Bridgeport’s Jakub Skarek, but their constant pressure eventually paid off. They were able to capitalize on the power plays they received. Although they didn’t score during their first power play, they created numerous chances that made it seem inevitable they would eventually find the net. This proved correct, as Providence scored two consecutive power-play goals, raising their season percentage from 4.5% to 9.5%. While this is not where they want to be, it represents a significant step in the right direction.

Two significant changes were made to the lineup: Max Jones was added, and Fabian Lysell was removed due to the injury he suffered against the Belleville Senators last Wednesday. Last week, the Bruins struggled without the speed that Lysell brings, but in this game, they appeared much more cohesive, primarily due to Max Jones’s performance.

Although Jones didn’t register any points, he played with urgency and seemed ready to seize his opportunity in the American Hockey League. I initially had concerns about the two players assigned to Providence this season, but they have greatly improved the lineup. While their presence makes it challenging for younger players to secure consistent playing time, they contribute to the team’s success, which I fully support.

I’m hopeful that goaltender Brandon Bussi will get a chance to play tomorrow. I think the Bridgeport Islanders could be the perfect opportunity for Bussi to secure his first win of the season and build his confidence. In their two matchups this season, the Islanders have generated numerous shots but significantly fewer high-quality chances, which made Michael DiPietro’s job quite manageable in both games. This will give DiPietro a well-deserved break. If Bussi can earn a win, it might open the door for him to start against the Wolf Pack tomorrow. For Providence to succeed in the Calder Cup Playoffs, both goalies must perform at their best.

Despite Lysell’s sluggish performance when healthy, another top prospect has emerged: Georgii Merkulov. In last night’s win, Merkulov recorded two assists, bringing his total to seven points in his first ten games. His elite vision is remarkable, and his shot is potent. Once he finds consistent linemates, I am confident that the goals will follow. Merkulov is a player to watch moving forward.

Catch the Bruins tonight at 7 pm against the Bridgeport Islanders. These are two crucial points for expanding their lead over the Isles and returning to the race for first place in the Atlantic Division. Hopefully, last night’s performance will help the team turn a new leaf and return to their winning ways.
