The Boston Bruins have traded forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones to the Edmonton Oilers, the team announced today. In return, the Bruins acquired defenseman Max Wanner, the St. Louis Blues’ second-round pick in the 2025 draft and Edmonton’s fourth-round pick in 2026. This deal also involves the New Jersey Devils, as Boston dealt Frederic at 50% retained salary to the Devils in exchange for unsigned draft choice Petr Hauser, who was then sent to Edmonton.
Frederic, 27, has appeared in 57 games for the Bruins this season, recording a stat line of 8-7-15. The 29th selection in the 2016 NHL Draft has spent his entire career with the Bruins, playing in 337 games across seven seasons. The St. Louis native has 55-54-109 in those 337 games and five points in 22 playoff games. Frederic was injured in the team’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs last week and is considered week-to-week by Interim Head Coach Joe Sacco. He was in the last year of a two-year contract with the team.
Jones, 27, has appeared in seven games for the Bruins this season without recording a point. He last appeared in a game for the team on January 25th. After being signed on July 1st by the team, the 24th overall selection in the 2016 draft has spent most of the season in AHL Providence, recording 21 points in 38 games. Before joining the Bruins organization, the Rochester, Michigan native spent his first six seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, where in 258 games, he notched 62 points. Jones was in the first year of a two-year contract.
The Bruins acquired Wanner, a defenseman from Estevan, Saskatchewan. The 21-year-old was selected with Edmonton’s 212th pick in the 2023 draft and has yet to appear in an NHL game. In 90 career games with AHL Bakersfield, the 6’3”, 184-pound defenseman has a stat line of 8-11-19. In 22 games this season, Wanner has 1-1-2. Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced that Wanner will report to Providence.
In exchange for Frederic and Jones, the Bruins acquired two draft selections in addition to Wanner. The Oilers’ second-round selection, originally from St. Louis, was sent to Edmonton instead of matching the offer sheet on defenseman Phillip Broberg. The 2026 fourth-rounder did not change hands before this deal.
