After a challenging weekend, where the Providence Bruins won two out of three games, showcasing their resilience in some high-scoring battles. The team looks to use that momentum as they compete against three of their rivals: the Bridgeport Islanders, Springfield Thunderbirds, and Hartford Wolfpack.
On Wednesday, the Baby Bruins traveled to Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to face the Islanders. They then played the Springfield Thunderbirds at the Amica Mutual Pavilion on Saturday and concluded the weekend with a home game against the Hartford Wolfpack on Sunday. Goaltender Michael DiPietro, a 2024-25 American Hockey League All-Star, took the net on Wednesday and Saturday, while Brandon Bussi started in goal on Sunday against the Wolfpack.

This season, the Providence Bruins have had strong performances against the Islanders, boasting a record of 9-1-0 before their latest matchup. The first period was closely contested, with neither team generating much action. However, the second period saw a shift; Patrick Brown, Vinni Lettieri, and John Farinacci scored goals, giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead. In turn, Oliver Wahlstrom, Michael Callahan, and Riley Tufte were sent to Providence to complete the transaction.
After implementing some recent changes, the team took to the ice on Saturday against the Springfield Thunderbirds in front of a home crowd. The Providence Bruins started strong, with newcomer Oliver Wahlstrom scoring a power play goal. Shortly thereafter, Riley Tufte extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal scored just before the end of the period. Unfortunately, the Thunderbirds cut the lead in half with a goal just 13 seconds before the first intermission, making it 2-1.
As the game progressed, the T-Birds scored in the second, and the score remained tied, heading into the third period. Tufte broke through early in the final period, scoring 22 seconds in and giving Providence a 3-2 advantage. However, Springfield equalized the game 3-3 late in the period to send the game into overtime. After a controversial extra frame, the Thunderbirds emerged victorious, winning in a shootout with a final score of 4-3. In the loss, goaltender Michael DiPietro made 31 saves on 34 shots.
The game on Sunday started with excitement as Max Jones scored early, prompting a shower of teddy bears from the stands. However, after a brief intermission to clean up the bears, the Wolfpack scored twice, taking a 2-1 lead by the end of the first period. The second period remained scoreless, but the third period saw a flurry of activity as the P-Bruins finally figured out Hartford netminder, Louis Domingue. The main storyline was how the P-Bruins adjusted to the lineup changes. Losing these players all at once was certainly a challenge. During Saturday and Sunday’s games, there were moments when the team struggled without the skill of Merkulov, Viel’s physicality, and Mitchell’s defensive leadership. This is an issue the team will need to address if they want to contend for the Calder Cup, but the P-Bruins did show some impressive resilience Sunday afternoon.
