With the National Hockey League’s annual Trade Deadline just a day away, rumors have been swirling around the Boston Bruins. Having traded away forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday in exchange for prospect Max Wanner and Draft compensation, it appears the Bruins will be sellers at this year’s Trade Deadline. However, could that be about to change?

According to a report from TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston, Boston has been very busy. On a recent appearance on TSN’s Insider Trading, Johnston was asked if there was a team in particular he was keeping an eye on. This was his response.

“For me, it’s the Boston Bruins. Look, they’ve already started the sales job here a little bit with Trent Frederic going to Edmonton earlier this week, but I think they could buy and sell. Someone told me there from that team “We’ve got a lot going on.”. Not sure what’s going to come together, but I think they’re also looking at doing some buying in addition to selling, and watch for Brandon Carlo’s name perhaps to come back into play here.”.

A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carlo has two more years remaining after this one on his contract, meaning a buyer could potentially get three playoff runs out of him. In what appears to be a massive sellers’ market, a Defenseman of his quality on an entirely reasonable contract should In theory, fetch a haul. While there are valid arguments as to why the Bruins should keep Carlo, his value may never be higher. He is currently 25th on TSN’s “Trade Bait” Board. His teammate Justin Brazeau is also on the list, at 30th. Brazeau projects to be a healthy scratch tonight in Carolina.

As for the buying part of the report, who the Bruins may be targeting at this time is unclear. It appears highly unlikely the Bruins would give up any assets for pending Unrestricted Free Agents given their position in the standings. Could the Bruins ship off some of their lesser draft capital for younger players under team control? Or could they perhaps move Brandon Carlo in a “Hockey Trade” for a bigger name?

Carlo and Brazeau may not be the only Bruins who could move between now and three o’clock Eastern time on Friday. Charlie Coyle could fetch interest league-wide given the need for center depth across the league. Coyle has already shown he can be a capable middle-six center on a Stanley Cup contender and has shown this year that he can also play on the wing if needed. At 33 years old, and with only one year remaining on his contract after this season, the Weymouth native may not fit in with the Bruins next competitive window, and it may make sense to move him now in order to maximize his value. While nobody knows for sure who will stay, go or join the Bruins between now and the deadline, it is shaping up to be fascinating.
