Per Brad Elliott Schlossman on Twitter / X, Boston Bruins draft pick Cole Spicer, who was slated to join Arizona State this fall, will not play for the Sun Devils. Spicer had committed to the program back in April after a season in the United States Hockey League (USHL), but will now seek a new home for the 2025-26 season.
Spicer, a fourth-round pick from the 2022 NHL Draft, started his collegiate career with Minnesota-Duluth in the 2022-23 season, logging 3-3-6 in 32 games as a freshman for the Bulldogs. After starting his sophomore season with 5-4-9 in 17 games, Spicer was declared academically ineligible for the rest of the season and parted ways with the program, eventually landing with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL.
Following a near point-per-game performance in 37 games with Dubuque, and with two years of NCAA eligibility remaining, Spicer sought to return to the collegiate level, but his future is now in question. Despite his commitment to ASU, he was a notable omission from the Bruins Development Camp roster in June, and according to Ty Anderson, Spicer is dealing with “significant injury issues.”
Spicer missed a significant span of time during his season in Dubuque, suffering an injury in the season opener and not returning to the lineup for two months. It is unclear if the reported injury issues are related to the injury that sidelined Spicer last fall.
