On Tuesday morning, the Providence Bruins announced the hiring of assistant coach Ryan Bourque. Bourque joins the Bruins organization after spending a year at his alma mater, Cushing Academy, in Ashburnham, MA, guiding the team to a NEPSAC title this season. Bourque is the son of Bruins legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Ray Bourque.
Bourque has experience as an assistant with the US National Under-18 Team, where he coached Bruins prospects James Hagens and Will Moore. He also has experience on an ECHL bench, spending two years on the South Carolina Stingrays bench and helping guide them to a 45-22-4-1 record and a South Division championship in 2022-23.
Bourque, a native of Topsfield, MA, is 34 years old. He will be stepping onto an AHL bench for the first time in a coaching position, but he is not unfamiliar with the league. Bourque was a third-round pick by the New York Rangers in 2008, and his career spanned 585 games across the AHL. He played in one NHL game with the Rangers, a 3-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators in April 2015.
Bourque will replace former assistant coach Matt Thomas, who left the organization to coach at his alma mater, RIT. Bourque will join Ryan Mougenel’s staff for the 2025-26 season, joining Trent Whitfield as an assistant coach. The coaching staff will also include goaltending coach Mike Dunham.
