With a week to go until the Boston Bruins’ season opener in Washington, DC, the B’s have reportedly made another cut. Per a report from PuckPedia, the Boston Bruins have placed Billy Sweezey on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the American Hockey League.

A native of Hanson, Massachusetts, Sweezey is in his second season in the Bruins’ organization, having played in 64 AHL games last season with the Providence Bruins. The 29-year-old right-handed defenseman had a goal and nine assists last year with the P-Bruins, as well as 67 penalty minutes, and a plus/minus of +7. Prior to signing in Boston, Sweezey spent three seasons in the Columbus Blue Jackets’ organization, where he played in nine National Hockey League games during the 2022-2023 campaign, including a memorable fight with former Bruins forward Jakub Lauko.

After placing Sweezey on waivers, the Bruins now have 11 defensemen remaining on their training camp roster. Assuming that the Bruins will carry seven defensemen to start the season, that means that they will have to make four more cuts on defense, in addition to whittling down their forward group. The B’s will travel to our nation’s capital tomorrow for their penultimate preseason game, where they’ll take on the Washington Capitals. It’s likely that more cuts will come after tomorrow night’s contest, with opening night rosters due on monday.
