After a rough loss on Friday afternoon to the New York Rangers, the Boston Bruins (14-12-0) are looking to get right and get back into the win column. The injury-battled Bruins are back in action today, playing host to the Detroit Red Wings (13-11-1) in their second Original Six matchup in as many days. This game opens a home-and-home with the Red Wings, with the second game scheduled on Tuesday night in Michigan.
Ahead of the game, the team held an optional skate at the TD Garden on Saturday morning. Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald reported that Charlie McAvoy skated before practice and that Viktor Arvidsson and Pavel Zacha skated with the team during the optional skate. On the injuries, Marco Sturm said Viktor Arvidsson is “definitely not” playing tonight, citing that today was his first time on the ice with the team. “We have to see how [Zacha] is today, and we will go from there,” making him a game-time decision for tonight. David Pastrnak “will be out tonight,” but Sturm does not fear that the injury will be a long-term one.
On Saturday morning, Henri Jokiharju was placed on injured reserve, paving the way for Michael Callahan’s call-up to the club. “Joki, he will be out, I don’t know how long. It’s a tricky injury; it could be days, we will have to manage that. […] Callahan will be in tonight.” Jokiharju logged 20:51 of ice time against the Rangers, with a primary assist and a shot on goal. Tonight will be Callahan’s fourth game of the season; he has one goal in 20 career NHL games.
The black and gold dropped their contest yesterday, but so did Detroit. The Red Wings hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning and fell 6-3; they enter this game on a three-game losing streak. Both teams are looking to bounce back to form tonight. On the second night of back-to-backs this season, the Bruins are 2-1-0, and Detroit is 1-2-0. Offensively, Detroit takes the fifth-most shots per game (30.4) but scores 2.92 goals per game, ranking 22nd in the league. On the special teams front, the Red Wings’ penalty kill ranks 19th, and is killing penalties at a 79.7% rate; that should be a good test for the Bruins’ fifth-ranked power play.
Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic reported that the Boston Bruins are going to go with Jeremy Swayman in goal tonight, after playing Joonas Korpisalo against the Rangers on Friday. Swayman has posted a 3-2-0 record in his last five games and is coming off a career-high 44-save performance on Wednesday night on Long Island. On the other end, NHL.com’s Joe McDonald reported that the Red Wings will start Cam Talbot. He has been the better of the two Red Wings goalies this season, but he has hit some bumps recently, conceding nine goals in his last two starts.
