Nearly two years after his last college hockey game, Bruins prospect Cole Spicer is set to make his debut with Western Michigan this weekend at Omaha, per Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald. Spicer joined the Broncos in early September, but has had to wait until now to return to the ice with his new team.
Spicer, Boston’s 117th overall pick from the 2022 NHL Draft, began his college hockey career with the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in the 2022-23 season, compiling 8-7-15 across 49 appearances before being ruled academically ineligible and leaving the team midway through his sophomore year. He would later disclose having dealt with post-concussion syndrome and its lingering effects, forcing him to step away from hockey.
He returned to the ice with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL for the 2024-25 season. A 9-26-35 performance across 37 games earned him a return to the NCAA ranks with Arizona State; however, he was forced to change course in late July after the Sun Devils announced they were “moving on” from Spicer. Ty Anderson later reported that Spicer had been dealing with significant injury issues.
Spicer will debut for a Western Michigan team that is ranked eighth in the country with a 7-5-0 record to open their title defense. The Broncos, currently tied for fourth in the NCHC, have seen their national championship offense dip from 4.0 goals per game down to 3.6, and their power play down from 25.7% to 16.7%.
