On Wednesday afternoon, the Boston Bruins announced that forward Riley Tufte has been assigned to the Providence Bruins. The six-foot-six winger was called up to the NHL squad on November 17, ahead of the Bruins’ game against Carolina that evening. Tufte scored a power play goal that night, spoiling Pyotr Kochetkov’s shutout bid with 9.6 seconds remaining in the game.
Tufte, who extended his contract with the Bruins over the summer, would appear in four games during his call-up and averaged 11:40 of ice time. He nearly scored another on November 28 against the Rangers – the referees waved it off for goaltender interference. Despite his brief stint in the NHL, the 2016 first-round pick delivered precisely what the Bruins wanted from him, showcasing his scoring ability and net-front presence.
Before the call, Riley Tufte had been successful in Providence. In 13 games, he recorded eight goals and eight assists for 16 points. At the time of his call-up, he led the Providence Bruins in goals and was ranked third in the AHL for point production. As of December 3, the day Tufte was sent back down, he still ranks third in scoring on the Providence Bruins. The P-Bruins are rounding out their five-game road trip, and Tufte is expected to join the team for their game Saturday night in Springfield, Massachusetts.
