The new look for the Boston Bruins in one of the more extraordinary games of the season is here, and it’s certainly bolder than other jerseys in the past. The team usually sticks to some mix of the traditional colors they’ve had, but these jerseys for the tilt on February 1st against the Tampa Bay Lightning are part of a more modernized aesthetic.
The Lightning are following suit, boasting their own new twist with two different shades of blue, and, among other things, lightning marks visible through the numbers and logo lettering. It’s easier for this type of opponent to branch out a little bit in terms of design, whereas the Bruins clearly have it more difficult when it comes to sticking to a certain sophisticated simplicity.
The biggest thing that stands out with these new Bruins sweaters is the quite yellowish-orange as part of the black and gold identity, which gives off a more in-your-face energy than the organization’s colors usually give off. The name and prestige of Original Six organizations like the Bruins usually speak for themselves, but perhaps it’s only a matter of time before teams young and old have to adapt to the younger generation color-scheme wise.
The increased usage of the color white for the gloves and the lower half of the sleeves is a bold move as well, but it makes sense as part of a winter theme. More sense than, say, having the six states of New England on the jersey, which feels like an element only the New England Patriots over in Foxborough should be using.
Overall though, you have to respect the organization for trying something new and taking a little risk, and seeing the jerseys on the ice as opposed to from a tweet is like seeing a landmark in front of you instead of on Google. With palm trees and a cold breeze around, that should set the ambience for looks like these.
Then once the puck drops, it should be an exciting tilt between two teams that have always had entertaining battles throughout the seasons, regardless of their playoff positioning. With a mix of the new looks and an enticing game for your typical Florida man and snowbird, perhaps this can be an event that pushes the Boston and Tampa Bay matchup to new, more heated heights.
