This weekend of Bruins college hockey belonged to the birds, the Hawks, and the Eagles, specifically. Four forwards delivered multipoint weekends to propel their respective teams to sweeps, doing their damage at even strength, on special teams, and in key moments. Which of them left their biggest mark?
Will Zellers (RW) – North Dakota – Zellers snapped a three-game scoring drought by torching Arizona State for four points in NoDak’s road weekend sweep. The freshman winger racked up two goals and an assist in their 7-4 win on Friday night, recording a shorthanded assist in the first period, then scoring twice in the third to put the game to bed.
He added another third-period goal on Saturday night, striking less than a minute into the frame to tie the game en route to a 5-3 win and the sweep. Zellers is up to 13-8-21 in 25 games, one of three forwards on the Fighting Hawks’ roster with double-digit goals.
Letourneau (C) – Boston College – Centering the Eagles’ top line on Friday night, Letourneau played one of his best games of the year with a three-point night in BC’s 5-2 win over UNH. Big Dean scored twice, one of which came on the power play off a sharp feed from James Hagens, and set up the eventual game-winner for Jake Sondreal, reclaiming his post atop the scoring charts on Chestnut Hill. Letourneau is up to 13-10-23 in 22 games.
Hagens (C/LW) – Boston College – Hagens added two points of his own in the Eagles friday night romp to keep pace with Letourneau for the BC scoring lead. Along with the aforementioned power play assist to Dean, Hagens flashed some two-way prowess by forcing a turnover at center ice and converting it into BC’s fourth goal of the night. He’s up to 11-12-23 in 20 games, having tied his freshman year goalscoring total in 17 fewer games.
Gasseau (C) – Boston College – The captain factored into each game of BC’s sweep, scoring the icebreaker on Friday and adding an assist on Saturday night. He’s now recorded a point in all four games since returning to the lineup after a near three-month absence with injury, and is producing at a point-per-game pace with 3-6-9 in nine games.
Looking Ahead: The big headline grabber for Bruins fans will be Hagens, Letourneau, Gasseau, Kristian Kostadinski, Will Moore, and Jonathan Morello going head-to-head as Boston College and Boston University face off in a Friday standalone game at Agganis Arena.
Mason Langenbrunner and Harvard will host RPI on Friday as their lone game of the weekend, as they gear up for the Beanpot the following week. Ryan Walsh and Cornell will head to Yale and then Brown for an Ivy League road weekend. Chris Pelosi and Elliott Groenewold will resume ECAC conference play with the long road trip up to St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
Beckett Hendrickson will host Wisconsin for a two-game series starting next Friday. Casper Nassen will head to St Cloud State for a weekend against the Huskies that could be pivotal in the middle of the NCHC conference race.
