Yesterday at Capital One Arena, the Boston Bruins grinded out a 3-2 shootout win against the Washington Capitals. Fraser Minten capped off the nine-round shootout win, helping the Bruins earn their 80th point of the season, and, with some help from other teams around the National Hockey League, the team moved into the first Wild Card seed in the competitive Eastern Conference.

Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy played a major role in the win by scoring both of the team’s goals. McAvoy recorded his first two-goal game since Dec. 1, 2024, against the Montreal Canadiens. However, with his two-goal game, McAvoy continued his excellence in playing on the road. While he extended his current point streak to six games, McAvoy also extended his road point streak to seven games, which is the longest by a Bruins defenseman since Ray Bourque’s 16-game streak back in the 1993-94 season.

During the seven-game point streak on the road, McAvoy has recorded nine points. McAvoy’s road point streak began when he recorded an assist on an Elias Lindholm goal on Jan. 26 against the New York Rangers. In four of the seven games during the streak, McAvoy recorded a two-point game. One of those four games was at the 2026 NHL Stadium Series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

When the Bruins needed McAvoy the most yesterday against the Capitals, he delivered by scoring two critical goals. The Bruins found themselves trailing 1-0 in the second period. With under eight minutes remaining in the period, McAvoy shot a puck on net against Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson that was able to get past him and tie the game at one.

In the third period, the Bruins found themselves trailing again, this time by a score of 2-1. With under nine minutes remaining in regulation, McAvoy delivered again by scoring a goal to tie the game. While he isn’t known for deflecting shots, McAvoy deflected a Pavel Zacha shot to beat Thompson to tie the game at two. On two different occasions, McAvoy tied the game for the Bruins.

McAvoy’s two-goal game helped him continue his excellent bounce-back season. McAvoy’s 49 points this season are the third-most on the Bruins roster, and his 40 assists are second on the team. McAvoy’s nine goals also lead all Bruins defensemen.

McAvoy has played an important role in helping the Bruins maintain their playoff position at this point in the season. In seven games in March, McAvoy has recorded eight points. Four of McAvoy’s nine goals this season have happened in March alone.

Tomorrow night at Prudential Center, McAvoy will be relied on by the Bruins again to continue his excellent road play when they take on the New Jersey Devils at 7 p.m. ET, in another must-win game to keep the team’s playoff position. While he hasn’t faced the Devils this season or all of last season, McAvoy recorded an assist against the Devils in both games he played in during the 2023-24 season.
