This weekend, hockey fans in the Ocean State are in for a treat as the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins host two back-to-back home games at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. With the regular season winding down and only ten games left on the schedule, every matchup matters as the Bruins look to stay atop the league’s standings and continue their impressive run on home ice.
Providence has appeared in 62 regular-season games thus far, compiling a record of 48-13-1 while leading the league with 97 points. The Bruins are looking to extend the team’s current three-game winning streak, where the team is 7-3-0 in its last ten games.
The weekend’s action kicks off on Saturday night, March 28th, when Boston Bruins prospect forward James Hagens makes his Providence Bruins home debut at the AMP, facing off against the visiting Bridgeport Islanders. As Atlantic Division rivals, Providence holds a 10-1 record so far this year, with this being the final game of the year and foreseeable future between these two AHL franchises. The New York Islanders’ top minor-pro affiliate is relocating north to Hamilton, Ontario, to start the 2026-27 campaign.
The Islanders, known for their gritty style of play, will look to spoil Providence’s home-ice advantage, but the Bruins have been tough to beat in their own barn throughout the 2025-26 campaign. Bridgeport has certainly been better this year than in the past, and many thanks are due to new Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche, who recently took over for Lou Lamoriello, who operated under an undermanned prospect pool.
Bridgeport currently sits in the fifth position in the Atlantic with a regular season record of 28-27-3-5 good for 64 points. The Islanders are currently on a four-game winning streak, 6-4-0 in their last ten games, and have a road record of 11-15-2-3 away from the Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Islanders players to watch tonight are forward Liam Foudy, who’s currently on a four-game point streak (2-3-5). Forward Adam Beckman has points in his last three games (4-1-5). 2025 first-round selection and Newburyport, Massachusetts native Cole Eiserman is pointless in four of his first professional games since leaving Boston University not long ago, but he is always a threat that needs to be watched closely. Goaltender Henrik Tikkanen is on a four-game winning streak but got the start last night in a 3-2 shootout victory at home against the visiting Laval Rocket. Remains to be seen whether he gets the back-to-back start tonight against host Providence, after starting and going the distance last night at home.
The last time Bridgeport and Providence faced each other, the Islanders beat the Bruins at the Total Mortgage Arena by the score of 4-1 back on March 7th. In that game, Islanders forward Matt Luff provided a multi-point game with a goal and an assist, while teammates Alex Jefferies, Matthew Maggio, and Liam Foudy also got involved in the scoring for Bridgeport.
The weekend’s excitement doesn’t stop there. On Sunday afternoon, the Springfield Thunderbirds come to town for another Atlantic Division showdown. Springfield has proven to be a formidable opponent this season, making Sunday’s matinee a must-watch for fans eager to see high-stakes hockey as the regular season reaches its final stretch. Springfield currently sits in sixth place in the Atlantic with a 26-29-6-2 record and 60 points, and is 5-4-1 in its last ten games.
The last time Providence and Springfield went head-to-head was this past Wednesday night, when Providence traveled to the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, beating the Thunderbirds 2-1 on their home ice. In this game, forward Riley Tufte and Jake Schmaltz provided the Bruins’ goal scoring, capturing the victory in James Hagens professional hockey debut. In his first AHL career game, Hagens had three shots on goal but went pointless.
Thunderbirds players to watch in Sunday afternoon’s battle at the AMP. Islanders forward Dylan Peterson is on a three-game point streak with 2-2-4 numbers in that duration. Forward Dillion Dube has 3-3-6 numbers in his last six games. Forward Aleksanteri Kaskimaki has 3-4-7 numbers in his last six games.
For the Bruins, these home games are more than just another notch on the schedule—they’re an opportunity to extend a franchise record-breaking campaign that’s been a cornerstone of the team’s success this year. Powered by standout performances from both veterans and up-and-coming prospects, Providence has turned the Amica Mutual Pavilion into a fortress, much to the delight of its passionate fanbase.
Going into tonight’s action against Bridgeport, here are some Providence Bruins players who have fared well lately. Forward Matt Poitras is riding a six-game point streak (2-5-7). Forward Joey Abate is on a four-game point streak (3-3-6). Forward Riley Tufte is on a three-game point streak (3-1-4). Forwards Jake Schmaltz (2-0-2) and Matej Blumel (0-2-2) are both currently on two-game point streaks. On the backend, goaltender Michael DiPietro has won his last two games and is expected to get the start in goal tonight vs. Bridgeport, while netminder Simon Zajicek gets the nod tomorrow afternoon vs. Springfield.
With the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs approaching, the Providence Bruins organization has already secured a postseason berth. The Bruins will get a first-round bye while preparing for a divisional battle against the lower-seeded winner out of the first round’s best-of-three series. The last two times the Providence team got a first-round bye, the better-prepared Hartford Wolf Pack took advantage of the Bruins being out of game action for close to two weeks, beating Providence in back-to-back years. My feeling is that Providence head coach Ryan Mougenel and the assistant staff of Trent Whitfield and Ryan Bourque will have this team ready to go with this year’s lineup, which has been a top-two team in the AHL all season long.
