The Providence Bruins flexed their dominance this weekend, sweeping the Utica Comets in a home-and-home regular season series that showcased their depth, resilience, and playoff-caliber form. With the two victories over the weekend, the Bruins snapped a previous two-game losing streak, with a loss at home and on the road.
The two-game series kicked off on Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, New York, where the Bruins took full advantage of their already impressive 2025-26 road record. The B’s offense came alive mid-game, coming from behind down 0-2 when Providence forward Joey Abate provided back-to-back goals to give the B’s a much-needed boost after an opening period plus were down to the host Comets 0-2. I’m sure after this first period, Bruins Head Coach Ryan Mougenel and the assistant staff were on these guys during intermission, urging them to be better. The results certainly paid off.

New Bruins forward Alexis Gendron scored a power play goal for his first in a Providence jersey to cap off a productive middle frame out in New York. Gendron was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers organization before this season’s National Hockey League Trade Deadline. Bruins defenseman Victor Soderstrom added an empty net goal and an assist in this game for his sixth multi-point contest since joining the B’s earlier this season. Forward Matt Poitras added an assist in this game, which gave him points in his last four games.
Michael DiPietro got the road start on Friday night, a place he’s been to before, having played at the Adirondack Bank facility for one full season. DiPietro stopped 19 of 22 Utica shots to extend his regular-season record to 29-7-0 with a 1.92 goals-against-average and .931 save percentage. This was a solid bounce-back win for Michael, who gave up five in his last start on the road in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in a 3-6 loss to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
On Saturday, the series shifted to the Amica Mutual Pavilion in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, for the second leg of this weekend’s home-and-home matchup against the Utica Comets. Despite the change in venue and a raucous Providence crowd of 6,717 in the home building, the Bruins maintained their momentum, even with the struggling man advantage, which went 0/6 in this game. On the other side of the Bruns special teams, the penalty kill was on par, stifling the two opportunities of a Comets comeback, particularly with a man-up.
Providence forward Riley Tufte snapped a five-game goalless streak, notching his team-leading 26th and 27th goals of the season, and is currently on a two-game point streak. Bruins forward Riley Duran had a goal and a helper in last night’s home win and now has 2-1-3 numbers in his last three games and notched his second multi-point game of the season. Poitras added another helper to finish the weekend action, extending his current point streak to five games.
Goaltender Simon Zajicek got the start last night, stopping 18 of 20 Utica Comets shots for the victory on home ice. Zajicek is now 12-4-1 on the season with a 2.23 GAA and .920 Save% in 17 appearances. Another Bruins netminder who needed a bounce-back win after losing his last game at home against the Springfield Thunderbirds, where he gave up three goals to the Atlantic Division rival.
The next game for the Providence Bruins is this Wednesday night on the road in Springfield, Massachusetts, to face the Thunderbirds at the MassMutual Center. Finishing up the week and month of March, the Bruins are at home next weekend for two games on Saturday against the Bridgeport Islanders and Sunday afternoon, once again against Springfield.
Providence is in first place in the entire American Hockey League with a regular-season record of 47-13-1 with 95 points. Currently, the B’s have a three-point lead over the AHL’s second-place team, the Grand Rapids Griffins, who are on the road today playing the Rockford Ice Hogs. Grand Rapids is finishing up a three-in-three weekend this afternoon at 4pm.
