After a terrible 2024-25 season, which saw them miss the postseason for the first time in nine season, the Boston Bruins have officially clinched a playoff berth in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Bruins had the opportunity to clinch a berth earlier today, when they hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning for their penultimate home game of the 2025-26 season. The Bruins fell to the Lightning, 2-1, and they were unable to get it done themselves, so all eyes shifted towards the other teams playing today, and the implications their games had.
There were two key games for the Bruins to pay close attention to after they fell to Tampa Bay. Those two games featured the Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders, as well as the Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils. The Bruins needed each of the Islanders and Red Wings to lose in regulation.
The Islanders fell to the Senators earlier today, 3-0, so full attention shifted to Detroit, who just fell to the Devils 5-3, which allows both Boston and Ottawa to punch their ticket.
While first-round matchups have yet to be decided, the Bruins’ most likely opponent will be the Carolina Hurricanes, though there’s a chance they could face the Buffalo Sabres.
The regular season ends on Tuesday, April 14th, as the Bruins host the New Jersey Devils, with playoffs set to start shortly after the season concluded, on April 15th.
