On this day in Bruins history, March 25th, two overtime celebrations some three-quarters of a century apart set and tied NHL records that continue to be heralded — and sought after — today.
Starting with the most recent, 3/25/2018, Boston’s OT scoring machine Brad Marchand tied the NHL single-season record for overtime goals when he notched the game-winner just :28 seconds into the extra session. It gave the Bruins a 2-1 victory against the Minnesota Wild on the road at the Xcel Energy Center.
It was Marchand’s fifth OT goal of the season, tying him with Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning (2011-12), Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks (2015-16) and Alex Galchenyuk of the Montreal Canadiens (2016-17).
Speaking of the Canadiens, here’s a look at the latest and greatest Marchand OT snipe that gave the Black N’ Gold a thrilling victory over the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge almost exactly to the day this year. Talk about “Marchy Madness” indeed!
Your just-as-impressive, at least from a historical perspective, March OT goal in Boston franchise history (fittingly against the Habs again) Habpened seventy-five years earlier on 3/25/1943.
Winger Harvey “Busher” Jackson scored the first ever overtime shorthanded goal in Stanley Cup Playoff history to give the Bruins a 3-2 win against Montreal in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Semifinals. Jackson scored the winner at 3:20 of OT, cementing his place in team and hockey history.
He’d be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame posthumously in 1971 after a playing career that featured both scoring accomplishments and controversies (sound familiar?).
It’s a safe bet his fellow prolific overtime scorer and on-ice rabble-rouser Mr. Marchand will be joining him in Toronto someday soon.
