It was another big weekend for the Bruins’ prospects in college hockey. Chris Pelosi and Elliott Groenewold headlined the slate with a top-ten matchup against Maine at the Alfond, but they weren’t the only Bruins draftees in the spotlight. Seven of the nine Boston-draftee skaters found themselves on the scoresheet, and Philip Svedeback, the lone goaltender, bounced back after a tough season opener. With all that in mind, who’s performances stood out the most on Friday & Saturday?
Oskar Jellvik (C ) – Boston College – Jellvik built off his hot weekend in East Lansing with an assist in BC’s 5-0 home-opening victory over American International College. The Swede has four points through three games and looks right at home in the Eagles’ loaded top-six forward group.
Dean Letourneau (C) – Boston College – Letourneau played the best game of his young college career against AIC, making several highlight plates and coming agonizingly close to scoring his first goal. He got on the board in BC’s Saturday night exhibition win over the US National Development Program, but it did not count toward his official stats.
Chris Pelosi – (C) – Quinnipiac – Pelosi chipped in a goal and assist in Quinnipiac’s weekend road series against sixth-ranked Maine. He recorded a secondary power play assist on the Bobcats’ lone goal Friday night, then scored his first collegiate goal in a wild back-and-forth Saturday night overtime affair. Trailing 4-1 early in the second period, QU stormed back, and Pelosi’s goal gave them a 5-4 third-period lead in an eventual 6-5 loss.
Philip Svedeback (G) – Providence – Svedeback bounced back from a tough opening loss to North Dakota by turning aside 31 of 32 shots in a 4-1 Friday night victory over Arizona State. In earning his first win of the season, Svedeback also notched the 33rd win of his college career, moving him up to fourth all-time in Friar program history.
Dans Locmelis (C ) – UMass – Locmelis recorded a trio of assists for the Minutemen over their weekend series split with Sacred Heart while winning 26 of 41 faceoffs. He set up the first and last goals scored on Friday night and added a helper during the 6-1 Saturday road win. Locmelis has five points in five games this season but has yet to find the back of the net himself.
Looking ahead: After an off-week, Ty Gallagher and Colorado College return next Friday, heading north for a weekend series with Alaska-Anchorage. Pelosi and Groenewold return home and host New Hampshire for a pair in Hamden. Locmelis and the Minutemen open Hockey East conference play with a home-and-home series against rivals Connecticut, hosting on Friday night.
Jake Schmaltz and seventh-ranked North Dakota host third-ranked Boston University in a heavyweight weekend series. Svedeback and the Friars head to Vermont to open their Hockey East schedule against the Catamounts. Casper Nassen and the Miami Redhawks look to bounce back from a tough weekend with a home series against Lindenwood.
Beckett Hendrickson and Minnesota get to stick around the Twin Cities for the weekend when they face local rivals St. Thomas. Jellvik, Letourneau, and Andre Gasseau welcome Western Michigan for a Saturday night standalone tilt on Chesnut Hill.
