On Tuesday afternoon, the Bruins’ social media team gave fans a slight rush by announcing a “TRADE ALERT.” The trade did not involve any other team; it was a trade done by players within the organization. Sean Kuraly will return to his old jersey number, #52, which he wore throughout his first five seasons in Boston. Andrew Peeke will divide his number by two, switching from #52 to #26.
Kuraly and Peeke were teammates in Columbus, their careers lining up for parts of three seasons in Ohio. Neither player wore #52 while on the Blue Jackets, with Kuraly wearing #7 and Peeke wearing #2. In March 2024, when Peeke was traded to the Boston Bruins, he became the first Bruin since Kuraly to wear the #52. When Peeke arrived, he mentioned that he had “heard about Boston for the past three years from Sean.”
When Sean Kuraly met with the media at the beginning of July, he joked that Peeke “owes me something for wearing it last year” and said they chatted about the jersey number. That prompted speculation about what would happen with the jersey number, and in the end, Kuraly will get his original number back. Peeke will be the first Bruin to wear the #26 since Marc McLaughlin, who wore it in 26 games over four years with the Bruins.
