The Boston Bruins have recalled defenseman Michael Callahan from AHL Providence and placed defenseman Jordan Harris on injured reserve, the team announced today. Harris, who was in the lineup last night’s 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers for an injured Hampus Lindholm, was reportedly limping postgame, but no injury has been reported. Callahan, who lost out to Harris in training camp for the seventh defenseman spot, will look to get his first taste of NHL action this season.
Harris, 25, has appeared in five games for the Bruins this season. After earning the seventh defenseman spot out of training camp, the Haverhill, Massachusetts native has 1-1-2 in those five games and is even. He notched his first goal in a Bruins sweater on Oct. 13 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring on a two-on-one and beating Jonas Johansson blocker-side. The former Northeastern Huskies defenseman was the 71st overall selection in the 2018 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, where he spent three seasons before being traded to Columbus ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Callahan, 26, has appeared in four games this season for the Providence Bruins and has not recorded a point. Last season, in 17 games for Boston, the Franklin, Massachusetts native recorded 1-0-1 and made his NHL debut on Jan. 14, 2025 against Tampa Bay. He notched his first NHL goal in the Bruins’ 7-2 win over the New Jersey Devils last April. For Providence in 2024-25, the former Providence College Friar played in 45 games and recorded 1-8-9, earning an All-Star game appearance.
The Bruins’ defensive depth has taken a hit with the injury to Harris and the lingering injury to Lindholm. With the extent of Harris’ injury being unknown as of now and Lindholm’s injury still impacting his play, Callahan may be asked to slide into a defensive unit that has struggled in the Bruins’ five-game skid. Barring a late-game scratch to Lindholm due to his injury, Callahan is likely to make his season debut on Thursday when the Bruins welcome the Anaheim Ducks to TD Garden for their lone visit of the season.
