The American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins announced today that the top minor-pro affiliate of the National Hockey League, the Boston Bruins, has signed forward Jake Schmaltz to a two-year AHL-only contract extension. The 6’-2” 190-pound left-shooting center was Boston’s seventh-round selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft held at the Rogers Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The 24-year-old Wisconsin native joined the Providence Bruins on an amateur tryout agreement in March of 2025 after his collegiate commitment with the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks ended, posting 20-43-63 in 147 career games. Last season, after his four-year NCAA career ended, Schmaltz had one goal for Providence to finish the 2024-25 regular season, but didn’t see any Calder Cup Playoff action before the AHL Bruins were eliminated in the second round. Attached to the ATO agreement last March was a one-year AHL contract for the 2025-26, which he’s currently serving.

So far this season, Schmatlz has appeared in 24 games in his first full season of professional hockey and has made some serious strides in year one. Jake struggled in his first few games to start his 2025-26 season, but has adjusted nicely, earning more and more of head coach Ryan Mougenel’s trust, getting regular time centering the Providence fourth line. Schmaltz has 5-6-11 numbers so far for the B’s with a shorthanded goal and eight penalty minutes.

Unfortunately, Schmaltz is struggling offensively and is currently on a seven-game pointless streak, his longest of the season. Offense seems to go in spurts with this player, so it’s going to be interesting to see Jake play in this second half of the season as Providence looks to position itself for an 11th Calder Cup postseason appearance.
