As first reported by Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal on Twitter/X, Bruins prospect and Providence College goaltender Philip Svedeback is set to miss several weeks with a sprained MCL sustained during the Friars 5-1 loss to Alaska last Saturday. Freshman backup Jack Parsons will assume the starting role in the Friars’ net until his return.
The injury is a significant blow to Providence’s Hockey East and NCAA tournament hopes at the worst possible time. The Friars currently stand on the outside looking in at the NCAA tournament field, sitting 18th in the NPI rankings, with critical conference matchups against Maine, Boston College, and Boston University set to be played during Svedeback’s absence.
Svedeback had been sporting a 2.32 Goals Against Average and a career-high .918 save percentage in 17 games at the time of his injury. He had recently been named the Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for November, and ranked second in the conference in both Goals Against and Save Percentage against Hockey East opponents, with 1.83 and .930, respectively.
His 54 career wins place fourth in Friar program history, though it is now unlikely that he will have the opportunity to catch Jon Gillies for third all-time. Svedeback is set to exhaust his NCAA eligibility at the end of the season as a graduating senior.
Drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Draft, he is the only goaltender in the Bruins’ prospect pool who is not signed with the organization. There has been no indication yet of whether he intends to sign with the Bruins upon completion of his college career or if he will consider other opportunities.
