The 2025-26 American Hockey League season has been a special one for the Providence Bruins. After defeating the Utica Comets 3-2 in a shootout last night at Adirondack Bank Center, Providence won its 50th of the season. It’s now the fourth time in team history that Providence has won 50 games in a single season. This season has been led by excellent offensive and defensive depth, and outstanding goaltending by the reigning Aldege “Baz” Basiten Memorial Award winner Michael DiPietro. Providence is also the only team in the AHL this season with 50 wins.

Whenever a team reaches a milestone, like a 50-win season, it offers a chance to look back in team history. For Providence, it’s now time to look back and see just how they have done when winning 50 games in a single season the past three times since the team was established in the 1992-93 season.

1998-99 season

The 1998-99 season was the first time in which Providence won 50 games in a single season. This season forever sticks out above the rest in Providence history. Providence went on to set two team records with 56 wins and 120 points, both of which led the AHL that season. Randy Robitaille became the first Providence player in team history to win the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL’s MVP.

After dominating the regular season, Providence showed why they were the AHL’s best team by winning the 1999 Calder Cup over the Rochester Americans in five games. 1999 is the only Calder Cup in Providence’s history.

Providence’s Peter Ferraro had 21 points, tied for the most points in the 1999 Calder Cup Playoffs. Ferraro also won the 1999 Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the MVP of the AHL Playoffs. Eric Nickulaus and Robitaille each recorded 20 points for Providence in the playoffs as well.

2007-08 season

The 2007-08 season was the second time in which Providence won 50 games in a single season. Like in 1999, Providence led the AHL in wins and points, finishing the 2007-08 season with 55 wins and 117 points. However, unlike the 1999 playoffs, the 2008 playoffs finished in disappointment for Providence.

Providence was eliminated in the second round of the 2008 playoffs in six games by the Portland Pirates. Providence won the first two games of the series, then lost the next four to lose the series. All four losses for Providence were decided by one goal, and two of them were in overtime.

2012-13 season

The 2012-13 season was the third and last time in which Providence won 50 games in a single season. Like 1999 and 2008, Providence led the AHL in wins and points, finishing the 2012-13 season with 50 wins and 105 points. Providence was the only 50-win and 100-point team during the season. That season, Niklas Svedberg became the first goaltender in Providence history to win the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award.

Unfortunately, like 2008, the 2013 playoffs resulted in another second-round defeat for Providence, this time losing to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in seven games. Providence led the series 3-0, then Wilkes-Barre/Scranton reverse-swept to win the series. Providence was embarrassed by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in Game 7, losing 5-0.

This season makes it four

This season has been a special one for Providence. One of the biggest reasons Providence has been dominant this season is because of DiPietro, who has defended his 2025 Aldege “Baz” Bastien season spectacularly. DiPietro leads AHL goaltenders with 32 wins, a 1.95 GAA, and a .930 save percentage. DiPietro has reason to not only win his second consecutive Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award, but also the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL’s MVP.

Providence has also seen great depth up front from its forwards in the names of Georgii Merkulov, Patrick Brown, Riley Tufte, and Matej Blumel. Eleven players on Providence’s roster have at least a rating of +10 or higher. Providence’s roster is well constructed as a whole. Providence’s next steps are to clinch the Atlantic Division title and the AHL’s best record to finish the regular season. Providence’s magic number to clinch the division is four, and the magic number to clinch the AHL’s best record is 13.
