Boston Bruins Head Coach Marco Sturm met with the media following practice at Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton, Massachusetts, on Friday, providing updates on the team’s roster decisions as the regular season nears its close. The primary topic of discussion centered around highly-touted forward prospect James Hagens, Boston’s 2025 first-round selection and recent signee to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Sturm made it clear during the press conference that Hagens will not be making his NHL debut in Saturday afternoon’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning at TD Garden. “James will not play tomorrow, and we’ll take it day-by-day.” Including the game against Tampa Bay tomorrow afternoon, the Bruins have three games remaining in the 2025-26 regular season, and questions remain if he actually gets into any of these final contests.

When pressed for more details, Sturm was candid about the uncertainty surrounding Hagens’ potential debut. “It’s the first time up here and while yesterday was an exciting day but he just needs more time to get used to our system. I think that’s the biggest thing, and we’re not going to just throw that kid in and fail. I don’t want to do that. He’s on the right track, and like I said yesterday, we’ll take it day by day and find the right time,” he said.

Sturm’s comments reflect the competitive atmosphere within the Bruins’ dressing room as the team looks to solidify its lineup ahead of the 2026 postseason. While Hagens has impressed in practice and brings high expectations as a first-round pick, Sturm emphasized the importance of patience and readiness. “I really want him to play, but I gotta feel comfortable doing that. Like I said I’m trying to do the best I can to make the right decision for this team first of all for this organization and James of course but we’re still going to take this day by day,” Sturm added.

I thought it was important to note that, in Sturm’s post-practice presser, he told the media in attendance that the internal competition with Hagens added to the lineup. Sturm said,” Players should fight for that spot and how that would be good. That’s what we want you know, we’re not gonna hand it to anyone not James either, so he needs to earn ot too. These guys should be all fired up every time they touch the ice, and make sure they’re not gonna give it away.

As the Bruins continue their push toward the playoffs, all eyes will remain on James Hagens and the possibility of his NHL debut. For now, fans will have to wait, as Sturm and his staff manage the roster with a focus on both immediate performance and future development. Honestly, it wouldn’t make much sense calling him up if he’s not going to appear in any of these final regular-season games to at least see what you have before the pressure intensifies in the upcoming first round of the postseason.
