The NHL is gearing up for another league-wide wardrobe shakeup. According to the highly reliable jersey-tracking hub Icethetics, the 2026-27 season will introduce a new “Hometown Remix” collection for all 32 teams. The Bruins are reportedly going brown.
According to the Icethetics First Look video (below), Boston’s jersey will have a collegiate look, which could mean text across the front. This might not be too different from the recent alternate jersey we’ve seen with the unspoked “B” on the front.
Brown isn’t a color you see too often in professional sports. If the design isn’t right, it just looks muddy. But in the context of an Original Six hockey franchise leaning into its deepest heritage, it actually works perfectly.
When original owner Charles Adams brought the Bruins into the NHL in 1924, their initial colors were brown and gold, which happened to be the exact color scheme of his Brookside Stores grocery chain. While we’ve seen the modern Bruins hint at this era before (most notably with the yellow-and-brown 2010 Winter Classic jerseys), committing to a full brown base is a bold embrace of the franchise’s actual roots. It feels gritty, old-school, and uniquely “Boston.”
Since the Bruins retired brown from their color scheme in 1935, not a single NHL team has had brown as one of its primary colors. It is actually kind of shocking when you think of all the teams that have come and gone since then, that not a single one focused on brown.
Over the last few years, the Bruins have given us some fantastic specialty jerseys. We got the bright yellow nostalgia trip of the “Pooh Bear” Reverse Retro, and the crisp, clean white 90s look for the sequel.
A rugged, historically accurate brown sweater feels like the perfect pivot. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel with crazy modern graphics. Seeing players like David Pastrnak or Charlie McAvoy flying down the ice in the same colors that Lionel Hitchman wore over a century ago is going to be a brilliant visual for a Saturday night rivalry game. This isn’t just your father’s Bruins team: it’s your great-great-grandfather’s team. You know, back when the players were actually tough (according to our friends on X).
I’ve been a fan of most of Boston’s alternative jerseys dating back to the 90’s (I even own a Hal Gill authentic “Pooh Bear” sweater), and I think this one has the potential to be one of the more memorable ones. Or it could look like mud. We’ll find out soon enough!
