Forward Viktor Arvidsson had a much-needed bounce-back season for the Boston Bruins in 2025-26. After the Bruins fell in the first round of the 2026 playoffs, what to do with Arvidsson became a heavily discussed topic. Now, Arvidsson won’t be returning to Beantown and is going to an Atlantic Division rival.

Today, Arvidsson signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings at a $5 million AAV. The Red Wings are now Arvidsson’s fifth different team he will wear a sweater for as the 2026-27 season, which will be his 13th season in the National Hockey League.

On July 1, 2025, the Bruins acquired Arvidsson from the Edmonton Oilers in a trade, and he was in the final year of his contract. Arvidsson’s season was a huge one that helped the Bruins return to the playoffs. Arvidsson recorded 54 points (25 goals, 29 assists) in 69 games played. Arvidsson’s +20 rating also tied his career-high for a single season. Arvidsson scored 20 goals and recorded 50 points in a season for the first time since the 2022-23 season.

Arvidsson provided solid depth for the Bruins all season, as his 25 goals and 54 points were each the fourth-most on the roster. Arvidsson’s +20 rating was the third-highest on the Bruins roster, and the second-highest among all forwards on the roster behind rookie Fraser Minten. Arvidsson’s two goals scored in the Bruins’ Game 2 win against the Buffalo Sabers were the only points he recorded during the 2026 playoffs.

Don Sweeney made a bold trade at the 2026 NHL Draft by acquiring Utah Mammoth forward JJ Peterka. When Peterka was acquired, it may have been difficult for Sweeney to re-sign Arvidsson to a new deal. Now, Arvidsson is off to the Motor City at 33 years old.
