A year after boasting three captains within their college prospect pool, the Boston Bruins added a pair of assistant captains to their ranks for the upcoming season. Quinnipiac University announced a trio of assistant captains on Tuesday to round out its leadership group, headlined by Bruins draft picks Chris Pelosi and Elliott Groenewold. Both Boston prospects are heading into their junior year with the Bobcats, where they’ll be counted on to build off breakout sophomore campaigns.
Pelosi set career highs across the board during his second year in Hamden, finishing with 18-16-34 in 35 games, tying for the team lead in power-play goals with six. He worked his way up to the top-line center role by the NCAA Tournament, and also competed with the US Collegiate Selects Team in the Spengler Cup over the winter break.
Groenewold finished his sophomore year as the second most heavily deployed skater on the Bobcats, averaging 20:20 per game, leading the nation with a +39 rating, and earning the ECAC Defensive Defenseman of the Year award. Like Pelosi, he also set career highs in all scoring categories, recording 7-13-20 while playing in all 40 games for the Bobcats.
The Boston duo, along with senior forward Matt McGroarty, will support senior captain Mason Marcellus, who attended Bruins development camp earlier this summer, as they look to lead Quinnipiac to a fourth Frozen Four berth in program history, beginning Friday, October 2nd, when they host New Hampshire in Hamden.
