The Boston Bruins college hockey prospects had a mixed bag of a weekend. Only four of ten skaters hit the scoresheet, but three recorded multi-point games. Meanwhile, the group’s lone goaltender made his first career start but took the loss after surrendering five goals. The highs more than made up for the low, and these guys stood above the rest:
Chris Pelosi – C – Quinnipiac – Pelosi recorded a pair of power-play assists as Quinnipiac beat Penn State 6-3 in Happy Valley, reeling off six unanswered goals after falling behind 2-0 in the first ten minutes. He helped spark the Bobcats’ offense midway through the first period with a low-slot scoring chance that fell right to Antonin Verreault to get them on the board.
His second assist, a tap pass to Jack Stockfish in the high slot, set up the eventual game-winning goal. After his second multipoint game of the season, Pelosi is now scoring at a point-per-game pace, 2-3-5 in five games.
Dean Letourneau – C – Boston College – Letourneau recorded three points over BC’s weekend split with visiting St. Cloud State. He capped off the Eagles’ 4-0 shutout win Thursday night with an empty-net goal, then added a pair of third-period assists Saturday as their comeback fell short in a 5-3 loss.
Letourneau has points in all three games to start the season for BC, and his 2-2-4 stat line leads the team. He also leads the team with 21 shots on goal, nine more than the next-closest Eagle skater.
Cole Spicer – C – Western Michigan – Spicer got the Broncos’ weekend romp over Notre Dame started early, scoring his first goal of the season just 18 seconds into the game on Friday night. He added a second-period power-play assist, recovering a loose puck and sending a cross-ice feed to Adam Benak to put Western up by three en route to a 6-1 win. Spicer has had a strong start to his senior season in Kalamazoo, skating at least 15 minutes in all four games and leading the team with 42 faceoff wins at a 60% clip.
Looking Ahead: Letourneau, Kristian Kostadinski, and Leo Henriquez will journey across the country to face reigning national champions Denver for a two-game series starting Friday. Will Moore will be out for an undisclosed amount of time with a shoulder injury, per multiple reports.
Jonathan Morello and Boston University have a home-and-home series with UConn, starting Friday night on the road in Storrs. Spicer and the Broncos face Michigan in a standalone game in Ann Arbor Friday night, as part of a broken-up home-and-home that will return in January. Casper Nassen and Lake Superior State will host Bowling Green for two games.
Beckett Hendrickson and Minnesota will renew their historic rivalry with Will Zellers, Cooper Simpson, and North Dakota, with two games at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis on Thursday and Friday night. The two sides split the series last season in Grand Forks, with Hendrickson and Zellers each recording an assist in their teams’ wins.
