When the National Hockey League and Fanatics announced their joint launch of the “Hometown Remix” uniform program for the 2026–27 season, jersey enthusiasts and hockey fans expected creative takes on franchise traditions. Much like the National Basketball Association’s widely discussed City Edition line and Major League Baseball’s City Connect jerseys, the Hometown Remix collection was built to give all 32 teams a chance to explore localized cultural motifs, historical uniform call-backs, and bold color palettes.
Among the league’s most anticipated concepts is the newly leaked Boston Bruins uniform concept. Images circulating across sports design communities depict a rich, deep-brown sweater that bridges the Original Six roots of hockey with Greater Boston’s deep-seated collegiate sports culture. While the team appears set to officially release the jersey in an upcoming event on November 3rd, a post on Twitter/X from the “Jersey Nerds” account has made the rounds, leaking not only the Bruins, but also 19 other NHL teams.
While nothing is official, the design and concept match what was speculated in the spring by “What Chaos!” host Pete Blackburn, and the Bruins’ “Causeway University” online presence (more on that to come). The NHL has had success with this kind of jersey and uniform promotion this decade with the “Reverse Retro” concepts, and it’s looking for a similar outcome with the “Hometown Remix” line. Let’s dive into “Causeway University” and the leaked jersey design.
The Lore of “Causeway University”
To lean into this collegiate aesthetic, the Bruins rolled out a clever promotional campaign centered around a fictional institution: Causeway University. With a dedicated page on the team’s official website, the tongue-in-cheek campaign treats the franchise as a historic campus founded in Boston.
Causeway University was founded back in 1924—the exact inaugural year of the Boston Bruins—by none other than mascot Sir Blades the Bear. The institution was established to unite academic excellence with athletic achievement, channeling hockey’s competitive spirit alongside Causeway Street’s energy.

The website playfully lists mock campus statistics and academic programs that appeal directly to hockey nerds, including specialized majors like Hat Trick Studies, Home Economics, and Goaltending Philosophy, alongside courses under the Causeway School of Business such as Salary Cap Economics, Concession Management, and Power Play Strategy.
The Bruins also added a nice touch with their “Notable Alumni.” All of which have their number’s hanging from the rafters of TD Garden, or in the case of former captain Patrice Bergeron, will soon have his lifted up with the likes of Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, and Zdeno Chara.
This elaborate fictional framing serves as the narrative backbone for the Hometown Remix sweater, rooting a professional NHL jersey in a fictional campus history that honors the city’s legendary academic and amateur hockey atmosphere.
A Deep Dive into the Design Details
The leaked uniform mock-up—featuring David Pastrňák’s iconic #88—showcases several design elements that set it apart from standard Boston sweater designs:
Instead of standard black, the body and sleeves feature a chocolate-brown backdrop. The Bruins famously wore brown and yellow during their inaugural era in 1924, and while brown highlights appeared in Boston’s 2010 and 2019 Winter Classic designs, this marks a full-base return.
An arched, yellow-and-white “BOSTON” wordmark sits prominently across the chest in classic varsity typography. This replaces the standard spoked-‘B’ crest, giving the sweater an unmistakable college campus aesthetic reminiscent of Boston-area hockey programs. This echoes the Bruins’ 2026 Stadium Series jersey worn in Tampa Bay last February and a look familiar to Boston University hockey fans.
The jersey features bold gold, and cream striping rings the lower hemline and upper sleeves, framing the base. The bottom waist stripe is accented with crimson brick-pattern trim, subtly nodding to historic campus architecture and classic brick motifs seen around the city.
The left shoulder appears to have the classic bear silhouette logo found on the Bruins current home and road jerseys, although some have speculated that a different logo could be used. In contrast, the front chest includes the current jersey sponsor patch opposite the captain’s “C” emblem.
The final feature of the jerseys are the block numerals filled with white inner accents and golden-yellow outlines appear on the sleeves and back. The font selection complements the arched chest wordmark, maintaining uniform consistency throughout.
The “Causeway University” Connection
Boston is a city full of history so why go with a college theme to kick-off the “Hometown Remix” era? Beantown is arguably the capital of collegiate hockey in the United States, hosting famous institutions like Boston College, Boston University, Northeastern, and Harvard, all of which compete annually in the historic Beanpot Tournament. By adopting a varsity-style persona tied to TD Garden’s location on Causeway Street, the Bruins pay homage to the city’s rich amateur and collegiate sports heritage, which feeds directly into fans’ passion.
Ultimately, the “Causeway University” Hometown Remix jersey stands out as a thoughtful blend of storytelling and design. By drawing a direct line from the franchise’s 1924 inaugural brown-and-gold aesthetic to the city’s unmatched collegiate hockey culture, the Bruins have crafted a uniform that feels both authentically historic and modern. As fans await the official on-ice reveal, this leak proves that leaning into local character and creative narrative can produce one of the most memorable sweaters in recent franchise history.
