The Boston Bruins are no strangers to the “next man up” mentality as it was announced a few minutes before puck drop that David Pastrnak was unfit to play. Anders Bjork would be slotted up to the first line but in a repeat of last night’s win, David Krejci and Co. put forth tremendous effort and created multiple scoring chances (despite the loss).

GAME BREAKDOWN

In a fast-paced first period, Boston wasted no time rushing the puck down the Canes end. Both teams came away with many missed chance to score on either end on the ice. Carolina would draw the first penalty with eight minutes left to the period. Despite all the traffic in front of Tuukka Rask, Boston managed to kill their power play.

As Boston’s Ondrej Kase continued to look for his first goal of the night, the B’s would go on the man advantage as Carolina’s Brady Skjei went off for a hooking penalty. The Bruins would capitalize as David Krejci scored a power-play goal (his second goal post-season), giving the B’s an early 1-0 lead. In the last few moments of the first, Boston carried the momentum as they continued to get the puck pass through the Canes defense.

END OF FIRST SCORE: BOS- 1, CAR-0

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS- 6 , CAR-7

The second period saw the Hurricanes upping their physicality, forcing Boston to frantically get the puck out of the zone. Both teams would be down a player as both Zdeno Chara and Andrei Svechnikov went out for roughing (after an initial hit on Charlie McAvoy).

Continued action came way of the second line once again as Ondrej Kase missed a few shots on goal. However, in the last seven minutes of the game, Carolina would fight their way through Boston’s defense as they attempted to get puck past Rask. The Hurricanes would be on the man advantage as Chris Wagner was called on an questionable infraction. Carolina tied the game up as Teuvo Teravainen scored his second post-season goal. Game play would shift quickly as Svechnikov snapped the puck past Rask, extending the lead 2-1.

In the last minute of the period, Boston would stage a mini-surge as both Torey Krug and Patrice Bergeron missed chances to even the score. Carolina would be given an interference penalty, and the B’s tie it up with seconds left in the period. Brad Marchand would net his first post-season power-play goal off a feed from line-mate Patrice Bergeron.

END OF SECOND: BOS-2, CAR-2

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-20, CAR-17

As the Hurricanes pushed forward and with the Bruins scrambling to get puck possession, the Canes looked to have scored, however the goal was waived off for goaltender interference. Carolina challenged the call, but were unsuccessful-thus giving the Bruins a man advantage. Boston unfortunately were unable to score despite generating chances.

In the last ten minutes of the period, Boston’s defensive play broke down and Carolina took full advantage. Dougie Hamilton netted his first post- season goal, giving the Canes a 3-2 lead. The Bruins would make a push to tie the game, however Charlie McAvoy was called for a hooking penalty, giving Carolina a man advantage. Despite the penalty, Boston would be the ones to place the pressure on the Canes, effectively killing the penalty.

With five minutes left in the third, multiple Bruins players continued to buzz around Carolina’s net in an attempt to get the puck past James Reimer. The final two minutes saw the Boston Bruins make one final effort with an extra skater on the ice. Despite the urgency in their play, the Bruins were unable to mount a comeback. Carolina would win, tying the series at one a piece. Reimer made 33 saves while Rask made 23 saves.

FINAL SCORE: BOS-2, CAR-3

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-35, CAR-26

NEXT GAME: Saturday, August 15th, with puck drop at 12:00 pm
