It was a good, solid win for the Bruins after an emotional start to the game as Dorchester-native and former Bruin (and Panther) Jimmy Hayes was honored after suddenly passing away this August. The Bruins handed the Panthers their first loss tonight at the TD Garden after they enjoyed an eight-game winning streak.

GAME BREAKDOWN

The team had an energetic start to the first period. Boston’s top line rushed towards the net where fans saw a near goal from Brad Marchand when the puck loudly rang off the post. Lots of great layers offensively as the Bruins limited Florida’s scoring chances. The B’s spent a fair amount of time in the Panther’s zone as they slapped the puck (with little hesitation) towards Florida’s net.

There were some dangerous looks in front of the Bruins net as the Panthers skated through their defense. As the action continued down both ends of the ice, Boston would draw the first penalty of the game as Brandon Montour was called for interference against Craig Smith (who is back after being out due to an undisclosed injury). Despite some close chances, the Bruins were unable to take advantage of the power play.

However, after persistent pressure on the puck, Boston struck first in the last 41 seconds to the period as Charlie Coyle wristed one in. A strong physical start to the game from the Bruins as they look to bring the same energy over into the second.

SCORE END OF THE FIRST: BOS-1, FLA-0

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-14, FLA-13

With the second underway, Florida tied the game at 1-1 as Anthony Duclair snapped one past Linus Ullmark. The Panthers had more bite to their game compared to the first period. A little scrum broke out after a near score from Thomas Nosek that saw the puck almost squeak by Florida’s goaltender Spencer Knight. Luckily with the help of his defenseman, Knight was able to keep the puck from going over the goal line.

Florida continued to swarm around the Bruins net forcing Ullmark to make some timely saves. After an almost goal by the Bruins, Jake DeBrusk drew a penalty, giving the team their second power play of the night. Once again, Boston had some near chances, however were unable to extend their lead.

SCORE END OF THE SECOND: BOS-1, FLA-1

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-24, FLA-28

There was no break in the game flow as both teams heavily pushed towards the net. Charlie Coyle would be sent to the penalty box as he was called for tripping. Unfortunately seconds into the penalty kill, the Panthers would score, making it 2-1. Florida continued to control the momentum after their goal. Bruins’ defensive breakdowns forced Ullmark to be on high alert as Florida peppered the net.

Boston would get on the power play after a call against Carter Verhaeghe and within seconds tied the game 2-2. Charlie McAvoy scored while Brad Marchand and Taylor Hall were credited with the assists. Both teams made their final plays in the last minute of the game but were forced to go into overtime.

SCORE END OF REGULATION: BOS-2, FLA-2

TOTAL SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-32, FLA-35

In three-on-three overtime action, both teams were unable to score, leading to a shoot-out. The Bruins were able to shake off a two-game losing streak as they defeated the Panthers 3-2. Charlie Coyle would get the game-winning goal in the shoot-out. Coyle picked up two points for the night while Taylor Hall also nabbed two points as he hit his 600th career assist.
