The Bruins were stone-walled tonight at the PNC Arena, facing a team that had outscored them 16-1 during the regular season. Carolina continued their winning streak against Boston as they defeated them 5-1 in Game One of the Eastern Conference First Round. Both goaltenders made their first NHL Stanley Cup Playoff starts, however one came out the victor nabbing the series game opener. Tonight’s game was lost after the Canes scored late in the second and fingers crossed, the Bruins get things moving for the rest of the series.
GAME RECAP
With Carolina’s starter goaltender Frederick Andersen sidelined with an injury, Antti Raanta easily stepped in between the pipes. The 32-year-old Raanta made 35 saves tonight while Linus Ullmark made 20 saves in his Playoff debut. Boston had more control in the first period in front of a very energetic Carolina crowd, however, were unable to keep the momentum on their side throughout the rest of the game. Both teams went to the powerplay during the first however there was no score from either side. The B’s outshot the Canes 14-10 as they closed out the period 0-0.

The game quickly shifted as Carolina opened the score late in the second period when Seth Jarvis redirected a Jacob Slavin shot past Ullmark. Shortly after Nino Niederreiter made it 2-0 when he wristed a shot as the Canes shifted momentum in gameplay. Tony DeAngelo and Martin Necas would nab the assists. Boston continued to outshoot Carolina 11-9 as they close out the second period playing from behind.

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-11, CAR-9
In the final stanza of the matchup, Boston’s Taylor Hall would be the only goal for the Bruins tonight as he scored off an Erik Haula feed making it 2-1. Unfortunately, Boston would be unable to gain any traction despite multiple shot attempts toward Raanta. There were moments when the Bruins sent the goaltender scrambling in the net, including a shot that pinged off the goalpost however Boston simply could not get the puck in the net.
The Canes would take a two-goal lead when Teuvo Teravainen scored midway through the third. Vincent Trocheck made it 4-1 when he backhanded a sharp shot that looked to deflect off of Ullmark’s helmet and bounce into the net. Andrei Svechnikov would score an empty-netter making it 5-1 for the final as they take Game One in a solid effort.

These two teams meet on Wednesday for Game Two.
